Invasion Day Rally – 26th of January 2011

Invasion Day Protest

Every year on the 26th of January, White Australians celebrate the founding of their nation on the bodies of the Koori people of the land. This annual holiday is observed by Indigenous Australians as a day of mourning, where they express a pain that few White Australians can relate to.

SL Marxist organized a rally at the Australian sim in Second Life, where we were met with racist opposition.

“[W]e took the land and missed a few, doesnt [sic] make us racist. countries take over land all the time……….we wernt [sic] quite as thourough [sic] as we should have been,” said one heckler, “[…]i wonder if the whole thing never happened then [you] would be happy eating witchity [sic] grubs and killing each other…….[you] can do that in [N]ew [G]uinea if u want.”

“lmao there is more to [A]ustralia then [sic] some blakc [sic] people,” said another.

This attitude is ubiquitous in Australia, and it exemplifies the very reason we are protesting. Today Indigenous Australian live on average 20 years less than White Australians, and are forced into segregated communities where poverty and disease has exacerbated. [1]

Thank you to all those who took part in the rally, your support is greatly appreciated. We need to break this vicious cycle of hatred that has condemned so many to suffer, not just in Australia, but worldwide. Thank you.

SOLIDARITY ACTION: Support the next British Student Day of Protest

Time/Date: 12am-12pm, Saturday January 29
Location: Speakers Corner, SL London Hyde Park

Almost two months on from the magnificent revolt outside the Tory Headquarters, the flame of student resistance in Britain lives on. On the 29th of January, British students will hold their fifth day of protest against education cuts and fee hikes. Tens of thousands of university and school students are expected to demonstrate and walk-out, sending a loud and clear message to the Tory/Lib-Dem government that they will not take these vicious attacks lying down.

If you defend the future of public education, you need to stand with the students on SL at London Hyde Park on the 29th of January. We will be occupying the speakers corner all day in solidarity with all those marching and occupying on Day X4. We will be sharing live tweets and news from the protests as events unfold and discussing where to from now for the student movement.

A broad demonstration organised by SL Left Unity –

I have made 3 separate placards you can use at the rally, plus a shirt that recognises the traditional people of Austrlalia.

Public lecture on Haitian Slave Revolt

The Haitian Revolution: The Greatest Slave Revolt in History

Time/date: 8am SLT, Sunday 23 January
Location: SL Marxists Headquarters, New Babbage (search “SL Marxists”)

One year on from the devastating Earthquake of 2010, Haiti continues to languish in ruins and poverty at the hands of UN and US occupation forces. No other country in the world has been as thoroughly plundered by imperialism as the small carribean nation of 9 million. Haiti is today a dumping ground of neoliberalism, strangled by privatisation and home to one of the poorest populations in the world.

Yet it’s all too often overlooked that the first black republic was itself formed out of one of the greatest struggles against imperialism to date. Join SL Marxists as we revisit the event that last overturned the chains of imperialism in Haiti, the great slave revolt of 1791. The Sunday lecture will be introduced by historian Wilhelm Palmira, followed by a discussion. All welcome.

SL Marxists Constitution

Posted in Uncategorized on 03/01/2011 by cp2ndlife

The following constitution was adopted unanimously at the first part of the Inaugural General Meeting of SL Marxists on Sunday January 2nd, 2011.

===SL Marxists constitution===

Welcome to SL Marxists. This constitution outlines the key principles of the group.

We live in a world of inequality, war and oppression. Trillions of dollars go towards bailing out the rich and governments around the world impose attacks on living standards.

Think this system, a system that knows no bounds to its brutality so long as there are profits to be made, is rotten to its core? So do we.

1. The SLM are revolutionary marxists. We stand for a society run on mass democratic lines in which ordinary working-class people own and control the production, a world in which the hundreds of thousands of empty homes would go towards housing the homeless instead of being burnt to the ground, and in which food would go towards feeding people instead of being dumped into the ocean in the name of maintaining the profits of the rich.

2. We need a revolution to tear the system down once and for all. This change can only come from below through the self-activity of the working-class itself.

3. The SLM conceives of socialism as workers’ self-emancipation and therefore does not uphold the political legacy of stalinism as a model of socialism.

Just as capitalism can not exist as anything but an international system today, neither can socialism exist as an island.

4. As internationalists, we recognise that all workers in the western world share much more in common with other workers in China, Uganda and South Africa than with the ruling class in our own countries. As a result, international solidarity with the struggles taking place around the world is vital, whether they be with the Palestinians facing yet more occupation and disposession or the recent round of strikes and factory occupations that have taken place across Europe.

5. We reject all forms of oppressions that work to divide people along lines of race, gender and sexuality.

So, to sum-up:
– The SLM are revolutionary marxists who stand in the the tradition of Socialism From Below.
– The SLM reject stalinism in its entirety.
– The SLM are internationalists who stand for revolution from below.

In Second Life, we’re active in every campaign standing with the rights of workers and oppressed, whether they be campaigns to drive the fascists out or those in solidarity with real-world struggles like the inspiring 2009 revolt in Greece. Recently, we played an instrumental role in building the Palestinian solidarity campaign within SL during the brutal bombing of Gaza.

However, Second Life has its obvious limits. When possible, we encourage our members to involve themselves in real-world activism, or even join a socialist organisation in real life.

As Marx himself stated, “The philosophers have only interpreted the world. The point however, is to change it.”. If you want to be part of this project of to building the beginnings of a fighting alternative to capitalism, we welcome you to stay involved with us.
